How about a leap day story? One of the guys I dated back when I was a teenager was born on leap day. He was 4 years old when we dated, I guess I was quite the cradle robber. He actually celebrated his birthday in September or something crazy like that. I can't remember his name, but he was really cute, long black hair, goatee, always in very worn Levi's. He had to go to juvey or reform school or something while we were dating, in Natural Bridge, VA. He used to write me letters with all kinds of very cool drawings on the envelopes. Ever noticed that a lot of guys in jail can really draw, or is it that a lot of guys who can really draw end up in jail? Anywho, happy birthday, dude, hope you're having a good one on the outside somewhere.

Happy Leap Day
Listening to: | Shawn Colvin, A Few Small Repairs | Reading: | Design for Nondesigners | Weather: | 58, partly cloudy, breezy | Liv and her pal Ava and I built a fire last night and made s'mores. Today we are chilling. It's good to be cat.
I downloaded a 30 day version of OrangeCD Catalog to catalog my cd collection. It costs less than $40, I think, and I might buy it. It's pretty cool. It connects to a music database called freedb. You can put the CD in your drive and have freedb look it up (like most of the players do now), or you can type in artist name, or album name, or track name, and choose from all the things that come up. I've been typing in artist, and most of my albums are there, track times and everything. You can add cover shots, too, which I've been lifting from the internet easily enough (a few words in Google Image search, right-click copy, paste into orangeCD). I catalogued about half my CD's (209) in about 4 hours over the past two days. It's been kinda fun. The program can also make a variety of cool webpages with navigation from your collection. If I buy it, I'll probably add the resulting site to my website for all to see.
I'm outta here, headed for fresh air!

First Robin of Spring
Listening to: | NPR Weekend Edition | Reading: | Neuromancer by William Gibson | Weather: | sunny, 26 | I told ya the groundhog was wrong! I saw my first robin of this spring in my yard 5 minutes ago, just outside the window above my kitchen sink. It's my reward for washing dishes. Actually, I saw a pair of eastern bluebirds out that window on Tuesday, another harbinger of spring. Now I'm not saying no more snow, I'm just saying no more feet of snow that lingers for weeks. A little more snow is good, I haven't planted my peas yet (maybe tomorrow if it gets to the predicted 60+).
I can't take much more of the national politix, Calgon, take me away. It's about to send me into deep retreat.
Of course Jonatha Brooke, a cool singer/songwriter and great guitar player, it playing at Club Cafe the night before the giant women's march in DC that I'm considering going to. The NORML conf is at the shi shi Crowne Plaza the Thurs/Fri/Sat before that, so I was thinking of schnagging liv out of school, skipping work, and heading east to enjoy both DC events. It would be way cheaper and easier to prioritize Jonatha, but both the march and conf would likely be a huge groovy blast to do, and not to costly because we can stay with my mom in Alexandria. Plus, liv would probably really enjoy and benefit from the DC stuff. Dilemma.

black hole eats half a star. that sucks. heh heh
Listening to: | NPR Weekend Edition | Reading: | still Eragon | Weather: | it's freakin snowing! | A'ight, yesterday is was in the 60's, sunny, generally luscious, and we were all looking for excuses to go outside. This morning, it's bloody snowing and 35. Your god is cruel and wicked, bitches.
I had the absolutely lovely experience last night of hanging with friends at the Blue Moose, listening to the ripping Kevin Frieson quartet. And the cherry on top was the sweet and wonderful Sean Haleem on vibes. Sean and Tracey Whorton and I all went to college together, and it was warm and fuzzy to be hanging out with them down on Walnut street last night.

Listening to: | my LOUD power supply fan | Reading: | still Eragon, did I tell you I finished Ender's Game? | Weather: | 22, cloudy | America has gone Atkins crazy. Even Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) is doing it. I think it's another dairy/beef industry conspiracy, like the one where they convinced all school systems (and most parents) that little children can't survive without consuming vast quantities of cow's milk daily. How would you like it if some other animals starting harvesting human milk for their kids? It's twisted, people, it's just not right. Occasionally animals do feed their milk to other animals' BABIES, but milk is actually FOR BABIES. Try a freakin carrot. Saute it with some rosemary, and you'll be wondering why you don't eat more vegetables. Seriously. Dude, they feed cows cows, and then wonder why they get weird. It's all wrong.
There's a cello recital tonight at a church in Fairmont, I'm thinking it would be cool to go. I can't seem to find out what's on the program, but I might call about tix and ask.
Tomorrow is a holiday, I'm getting paid to not work! It's one of the truly fucking excellent things about amerika. Liv and I haven't been to Pittsburgh in a while, perhaps we'll head up and go to the luscious eyecandy buffet that is Phipps Conservatory. Then a little IKEA action (I got my tax refund, amerikan wage slave perk #2), some Barnes and Noble, Best Buy, shop till we drop. But maybe the Strip District instead of the mall-y stuff. Speaking of which,
I heard the terrible news that the Rosebud closed down. That sucks royale. I really love the Rosebud. It's been my favorite Pittsburgh music venue since the Graffiti shut down a few years ago. I've seen some wonderful shows at the Rosebud, most recently a stunning Bruce Cockburn show. Ya get there early, go to Primanti Brothers for a phat sandwich and a couple of Yeunglings, then talk a little doobie walk up that funky industrial made mod Strip, and head into the Rosebud to hopefully grab a couch spot for the show. Son of a bitch, why didn't I do that more often? Infamous last words. Don't postpone joy (unless I haven't had my joy yet). :)

Listening to: | NPR | Reading: | still Eragon | Weather: | 23, partly sunny | My 20th highschool reunion has prompted me and some of my classmates to try to reconnect. It's very cool! I got an email today from a long lost classmate, and I'm looking forward to hearing all about how he's turned out. There's just something cool about the passage of time, it's that silver and gold thing.
TGIF, I say! Beer tonight at Archie's. Then later I'm sitting in on bass with Daria's trio. Promises to be a nice ending to the week. One thing the idle rich can't get that rocks that we working-class slobs get to fully groove on - the concept of Friday. Fuck, yeah.
The 7 day weather forecast indicates that this yard full of snow might be significantly melted by this time next week. Time to plant onions, and soon peas! I saw an indigo bunting on Sunday, so I'm thinking the groundhog was dead wrong. I'm going with this theory. Though I did have to have some fuel delivered this week, it's been a fuel-sucking winter. That's OK, it's good to keep your tank full all summer, reduce condensation. It's just unfortunate that the price is double in February what it will be in June. Money schmoney, I say.
National presidential politics is annoying me, so let's not discuss it.
Big women's march in DC, right after the NORML conference, which is also in DC. I smell roadtrip! Tally ho.

Take a ch ch ch chance
Listening to: | Michael McDonald Motown | Reading: | Eragon by Christopher Paolini | Weather: | sunny, 24 | Tomorrow is liv's 13th birthday! She's an amazing person, I hope we can stand each other for the next few years. It's a teen thing. I need a fairy godmother, or she does, or both.
I'm ready for some longer daylight, I'm a crispy fried fritter these days at work. I guess that happens after 7 years. I know too many people who are very bitter and negative about aspects of their jobs, and I'll be asking you if you want fries with that before I let it get that ugly. I need a little inspiration.
My 20 year highschool reunion is coming up. Did you go to yours? There were about 750 people in my class, hell I can't even remember 5% of them. But I'm thinking about going, just to see the few I do remember.

12 Below
Welcome February, it was 12 below zero on my porch at 3:30 this morning. It's a very bright sunny 14 above right now. I'm hoping for 25. I'm going to a baby shower at 2:00 and I'm hoping to move a little more snow before then.
I have about 50 law students to interview over the next 2 days for a summer job at my office. Each student gets 15 minutes to wow me, and I'm always extremely braindead when it's over. I hate to rate people, but I can't keep them straight after about the first 5, so I created a scoresheet that I fill out for each person on the spot. To be honest, if one could do handsprings, he or she would likely get the gig. Of course guitar players get bonus points.
Those are probably the criteria I'll use in the upcoming election, as well.
